Power Meter

What is a Power Meter?

A Power Meter is one of the most useful and simple instruments to measure electrical power when only high-level power data is required. Power is the product of Voltage(V) and Current (A), a power meter measures the voltage and current to calculates the power going through a circuit.

Power Meter

Power meters are an essential tool for technicians and engineers performing simple tasks such as stand-by power measurements. The speed and accuracy of measurement are the most important features of a good power meter, followed by how this information is shown to the user.

Typical use of a Power Meter

Power meters are simple, easy to use instruments to accurately measure the power of a circuit. They are used to for a wide range of application such as testing electrical devices, circuit load, device efficiency and and many more applications.

Working Principles of a Power Meter

At a high-level there are two types of power meters, AC power meters for AC circuits and DC power meters for DC circuits.

A good power meter will typically report the active voltage, current and power in realtime. The higher the refresh rate the better the meter, however accuracy of measurement is just as critical.

Some power meter include report cumulative power over time, Watt Hour Meters, these report the amount of power passed through the circuit over type.
